Always Late Kate - Chapter 3

Always Late Kate – Chapter 3

(Writing Prompt - Choose a key object within your story and center the chapter around that object in some way.)

Kate woke up with a throbbing headache and her entire body felt like lead.  Looking around she tries to make out her surroundings.  The place smelled of disinfected cleaner and rubber gloves, as her eyes began to focus the knot in her stomach grew.  She knew where she was and that realization made her remember how she got there.

She remember driving somewhere in a hurry, but she couldn’t quiet remember why.  Then she remembered lights flashing in her eyes and a loud noise and then an impact.  “Oh no” she thought to herself, “If I am in the hospital, what happened to the person that I hit?”  As images of pregnant women and small children flashed in her mind fear and dread rose up and gripped her tight.  She grabbed at her chest trying to breath and was able to take in one deep breath before she got sick all over the bed and herself.

“Well isn’t this just great” Kate thought to herself, “Now I can add smelling to the list of horrible things that seem to be happening to her!”

Not wanting to smell herself Kate decided it was time to get up and clean herself up but as she went to stand her leg gave out and she fell to the floor.  As soon as she did an alarm she had not seen went off, looking down at her wrist she saw it had a tag on a wrist band that said fall risk.  “Now ain’t that something” Kate thought to herself as she tried to stand.  However, before she could get any type of control of her legs two nurses were in her room to help.

“Miss. Carven, what are you doing!” the older looking of the two nurses snapped.

“I, ah…. I was just trying to get cleaned up” Kate stuttered.

“Well young lady, you are not to get out of this bed for any reason, do you understand me?” The elderly lady said.

“Oh, Mrs. Janet she just woke up she probably doesn’t even remember what happened give her a break, will ya.” The young nurse replied.

“I guess you are right Mrs., Janet said, soften her tone as she gave Kate another look.  Now don’tcha worry dear, I will help you get cleaned up.  In the meantime you get to know this bed honey because you will be in it for awhile ok.”

Kate looked down at the bed and sighed to herself.  What had she done so very wrong in her life that had allowed for so many bad things to happen to her?  I mean she was a good girl….most of the time.  She tried to go to church, and help people when she could.  Why did it seem fate was out to get her?

As that thought went through her head she looked up to see two different nurses wheeling in another patient?  The young man pushing the bed smiled at her and said, “Kate this is Celine and she is going to be your roommate for awhile.  She was in the car behind you when that truck plowed into you.  I am sure you both will find plenty to talk about!”

“Celine” Why does that names sounds familiar to me, Kate wondered.  As she looked at the young women she just knew she had met her somewhere before.  But where?  “Oh why can’t I remember anything!” she screamed.

Mrs. Janet was right there patting her arm.  "Don’t worry dear the doctors say it is from the bump you got during the accident; they say you should remember everything again in a few days.  Just give it time deary.  Now let’s finish getting you cleaned up and back in bed shall we?"

A while later Kate was clean and in a new hospital gown and stuck back in the bed.  Mrs. Janet had told her not to get up without hitting the call button for help.  She explained that along with a good size bump on the head she had done some damage to her left leg which is why she could not seem to stand on her own.  The doctors had set it and said it would heal in time.  Seems everything would “heal in time” Kate muttered to herself.

As she laid there once again trying to remember the details that lead up to her being stuck in the hospital in a bed she was not allowed to get out of, Celine awoke.

"Hi Celine, glad to see you awake.  How are you feeling?" Kate asked.  Celine smiled and half-heartedly laugh.  “Well I feel like I was just hit by a car but other than that I am ok, how about you?” Celine looked at Kate like she was really seeing her for the first time.  “Wait, you are Kate Carven right?  You are the reporter who is covering my wedding aren’t you?”

Well it seems Celine was not suffering from the same type of memory lost she was, Kate thought to herself.  I did just get a new job; I guess that is why I remember her.

“Yes, I guess I am”, Kate said.  “In truth I don’t remember much of the past week.  But, if you remember me than I guess I am the one covering your story.  It is nice to meet you again; Kate reached out her hand to shake Celine’s and started to loss her balance.  Remember the bed rule she once again muttered something to herself and took her had back.  “I would shake your hand but I am not allowed to get out of the bed.  You know I always pictured myself beginning stuck in beds for different reasons”, Kate laughed.

Celine laughed and nodded her head in agreement, “I hear ya girl – this just stinks!”

“So what would you like to talk about?” Kate asked Celine.

Celine thought for a few minutes and then said, “How about clothes?  I love to talk about fashion.”

Kate laughed a good hearty laugh and said, “Well this hospital gown was so last season for sure!”

___________________________________________________________

The two girls laughed and talked for hours before finally given in to exhausting and calling it a night in the wee hours of the morning.  They spent the next few days hanging out in their room just chatting.

Kate really liked Celine, she was witting and friendly and she hoped that they would keep in touch after they were both released from the hospital.  Celine made being stuck on bed rest bearable and she really enjoyed her company.  She had enjoyed it so much she had stop worrying about the how’s and whys of what put her in the hospital in the first place and just enjoyed the company.

_____________________________________________________________

Kate awoke the next morning feeling refreshed and happy.  Today Celine was getting released and while she still had a few more days before she too could go home, she was happy for Celine.

Celine had promised her she would come back and visit her and they had just got through exchanging phone numbers and all of the other normal “Let’s be friends” information you give out.  Just then Celine’s fiancé, Caleb, showed up to pick her up.  As soon as Kate seen him she remember!  She remember why she had left in such a hurry, she remember her secret promise to herself to get him and Kendyl back together and she remember she told herself she was not suppose to like Celine.  After all she was the other women.

As everything came rushing back to her all at once, she felt like she had betrayed Kendyl!  What was she going to do now, she thought to herself?

Always Late Kate - Chapter 2

Always Late Kate Chapter 2

(Writing Prompt - You can’t outrun the past. Include at least one flashback detailing an event of your protagonist’s past.)

It had been a week since Kendyl told Kate that she decided to not tell Caleb about their past.  It was for the best Kendyl told her, Kate could tell she was fighting back tears but she listened quietly as her friend gave her a list of reasons she felt it was best to not tell him. Kate could tell that not one of them made Kendyl feel any better.  But being the PIC, or partner in crime as her mother always called them, she listened to her friend and tried hard to not shake some sense into her. She knew it was not an easy decision Kendyl had made and she was trying her best to respect it.  Matter of fact she had been trying so hard she realize it was officially seven days since she spoke to her about it.

Sure they had talked, they always talked but not about him . Not about Caleb or the heartbreak Kendyl went through when he never came back. Not the tears in her eyes as she talked about the past and not the earth shattering epic love they once shared.  Katie had been fighting with herself all week, trying to understand why Kendyl would knowingly let him marry another woman when she clearly still loved him.  Sure Jeffery was a nice guy, he was sweet and romantic and the kind of guy most girls would kill to have in their life but she just didnt think he was right for Kendyl.  It wasnt because she secretly wanted him! No that wasnt it at all she told herself as she stared in the mirror; or was it?  Was she fooling herself into think Kendyl and Caleb were meant to be together because she wanted him for herself……?

NO! She screamed in her head!  No! She was not being greedy! It had nothing to do with Jeffery. It was about Kendyl and Caleb and the love they once had.  As the thought crossed her mind she thought back to the day Caleb proposed to Kendyl.  Closing her eyes she remembered that day like it was just yesterday..

Shhhh, she will hear you if you dont quiet down, he scoffed!  Caleb was pace back and forth and Kate could tell he was a nervous wreck!  He was so cute she couldnt help but giggling at him!

*standing up straight Kate took a deep, stop giggling breath and smiled*

Oh relax already! You could stand on your head wearing a clown suit in the middle of a crowded room and Kendyl would still say yes. She loves you Caleb, and no matter what you do she always will. So if you want me to stop giggling then stop acting like a fool and relax. Even as Kate was given him the speech she could barely contain the giggling fits.  She couldnt help herself, he was such a love struck fool. It made him do the silliest things.

Caleb gave her that look. You know the one that says I dont find you the least bit funny.  Kate just laughed again and reached out to straighten his tie.It looked like it had been pinned in place by Calebs 5 year old cousin.

Look at me Kate said.  I have never ever seen her as happy as she is with you and she will be thrilled you are finally asking her for her hand in marriage so just take deep breaths and think of how much you love her and everything will be fine!

Caleb nodded and took that deep breath and went to ask the women he loved more than life itself for her hand in marriage.

Kate of course waited till he walked out of the room and was down the hall before she started to follow him, no way was she going to miss this!

The room had been done up with flowers everywhere and a special dinner had been prepared just for Kendyl, all her favorites of course.  Caleb still looked like a nervous scientist waiting for his experiment to blow up in his face but he was doing his best to hide it.

Thinking that the dinner would never end, Kate started to nod from boredom when she heard him clear his throat this was it she thought!

Kennnndyyl

*he said softly before taken a deep breath*

Kendyl, I know I cant promise you a big house, expensive jewelry or nice cars but what I promise you is that no one will ever love you move than me!

*taken another deep breath to steady himself he went on*

I love you Kendyl and if the world ended or alien took over my body I would still love you; nothing will every change that I could never love another person like I do you and I pray you feel the same way!

*One last deep breath*

You are the girl of my dreams, the woman who I have waited my whole life to find and I never want to let you go.  Please Kendyl, my love, will you spend the rest of your life with me.   Marry me!  Be my wife and I promise I will spend the rest of my life doing everything in my power to make all your dreams come true!

Kendyl Margiotta, he said determined now and full of love, will you marry me?

Kendyl leaped in Calebs arms and screamed yes!

As soon as the word was out of her mouth Kate began to jump up and down, so excited for her friend.

Decided she had ease dropped enough she walked tip-toed slowly away from the door and backed right into Jeffery who was coming to the wedding hall to drop off a batch of fresh flowers.

Kate quickly apologized I am so sorry, I am such a klutz please forgive me

*holding her hand out and trying to keep from blushing she looked up at Jeffery and smiled*

Hello, my name is Kate.

But, Jeffery didnt see her, following his gaze she seen her was staring at Kendyl who had left the dining room to freshen up and use the rest room.

As the memory fade, Kate wiped a tear from her face!  No, it had nothing to do with Jeffery; Kendyl was wrong plain and simple!  Kate couldnt let Caleb marry Celine, determined she knew she had to do something to fix this mess!  She just didnt know how but she felt like it was the right thing to do with every fiber of her being!

Unable to stop herself Kate found herself grabbing her car keys and headed for the door.  If she was going to do this she needed to do it while she still had the nerve to do so!

She got Calebs address off the information packet he filled out for his wedding.  She knew she should feel bad for taken it, after all she could loss the job she had just worked so hard to get or worse but it didnt stop her from snagging it that day she interviewed him.

With so many thoughts racing through her head she did see the truck lights till it was too late........

*tires squealing and then a loud crash that was so loud it could be heard miles away*

Kate knew she had been hit all she could feel was pain and a cold numbing sensation.  As the blackness seemed to close all around her all Kate could think of was that she would never get the chance to fix everything.

Always Late Kate - Chapter 1

“Always Late Kate – Chapter 1”

(Writing Prompt - A close friend has a life-altering decision to make and asks your protagonist for advice. What advice do they give?)

Kate was surprised to find that not only did her job interview go smoothly but she was already given her first assignment.  She was now working as a reporter for “Simstar Times Newspaper”.  While she was most likely the lowest paid reporter at the company and her desk was in the worst location possible, right next to the coffee maker.  She was thrilled to finally have a job; so even though she had to make a million coffee runs for the more important people in the company all day and had only a small story it was hers and that was enough for her!

Kate woke up the next morning feeling refreshed and ready to start her day!  She was happy for the first time in ages and nothing was going to bring her down….nothing that is till she showed up at Whispering Lakes Wedding Hall for her assignment.

Kate knew she was to cover the wedding of Celine Etoile, daughter of the town’s governor, but she had no idea the groom was Caleb Dawson!

Caleb was her best friend Kendyl Margiotta’s ex-boyfriend.  They had been together since high school and everyone just knew they were going to get married and grow old together.  Their love was the of stuff romance novels. When the time came for them to get married everyone came to celebrate the happy couple’s wedding.  Everyone showed up….everyone that was but the groom.  He had left Kendyl at the altar with no answer as to why.  She spent weeks trying to find him; she felt he owed her an explanation if nothing else.  After searching for him to no avail, she finally gave up and went into a deep depression.  Many of her friends did not think she would ever pull out of it and be whole again.  Three long years later Kendyl had finally pulled her life together again.  She was even dating someone else a guy named Jeffery McGee that no one had met yet but who seemed to truly care about her.

Kate stared at the Caleb Dawson talking to his new bride-to-be, frozen with fear and confusion.  What should she do?  Should she act like this man had not broken her best friend’s heart and write her story on their wedding?  Should she scream at him and slap him for hurting Kendyl the way he had?  As she stood there deep in thought, trying to decide what to do next, Caleb saw her and began heading her way.

*reaching his hand out for a handshake*

Caleb begins to speak,” Nice to meet you, Kate!  I am told you are the one who will be covering the wedding.  If you have any questions or need any help please don’t hesitate to ask.  My fiancé Celine is busying going over the guest list for tonight’s rehearsal dinner so she will be with you a bit later. In the mean time is there anything I can do for you now?”

Kate couldn’t believe it!  Speechless, she just stared at Caleb like he had grown three heads.  They grew up together, went to school together, he was going to marry her best friend how could he stand there and act like he had never meet her before?

*Just than a loud crash happens in the distance and a women screams*

Caleb says, “I’m sorry. I must go see that everyone is ok. I will be back soon.”  And with that he darts out of sight.

As Kate stood there trying to figure out the recent events that had just taken place as well as what, if anything, she should do about them Caleb new fiancé, Celine, walked up and introduced herself.

“So you must be the new reporter who will be covering the wedding”, Celine says.  “Daddy said you would be here for the rehearsal dinner and that you would be interviewing us as well.  Do you have everything you need?  Will you be taking pictures as well?  Because my hair is a mess and I really would hate for daddy to be disappointed in my appearance after he worked so hard to put together everything for my special day.  Oh I am doing it again; I am so very sorry I tend to ramble when I get nervous!  I just want everything to be perfect.  Please forgive me.”

Kate couldn’t help but to like this woman.  She was very polite and seemed like a very sweet person. She could see why Caleb liked her but that did not excuse him for what he had done to her best friend!  That however, was not this woman’s fault, it was something that had happened years ago, so for now she would just do her job and decide later what to do about Caleb.

Kate spent the rest of the afternoon talking with Celine about her wedding plans, what her dress looked like and other small details about the wedding.  Unable to stand it any longer Kate decided to ask Celine how she had met Caleb. She hoped it might shed some light onto his disappearance and explain why he acted like he had never met her before. She listened closely to Celine’s story of how they first met.

“It was about three years ago,” Celine started.  “My father and I were driving into town to meet my mother for dinner.  It was getting to be about dusk and there was a horrible rain storm going on.  We were about four miles on the outside of town when we saw a car turned over on its side, half off the road.  There was a young man in it who was dressed in a suit and he was badly hurt.  My father and I helped to get him out of his over-turned car and took him to the hospital.  He was in a coma for three weeks before he awoke. No one knew who he was and the cops said that he had no ID of any kind on him. In their opinion they thought he was robbed and that they had taken everything of value including all of his identification.  There was a very good chance he would not have survived had daddy and I of not found him when we did the doctors told us.

Once he awoke from his coma he had no memory of who he was or where he lived.  Since no one had come to the hospital to claim him and he did not know where his home was or even if he had one daddy let him move into the west wing of our house.  I am sure you can guess that as time went on we fell in love”, Celine finished.

*a tear drop rolled down Kate’s cheek*

How horrible it must have been for him to wake up and not remember anything or anyone.  If only everyone had known!  It explained why the name on the invitations did not ring a bell with her, since he did not know his name he must have picked one for himself.  Kale Dursam wasn’t that close to his real name, but it at least made sense to her now.  It also explained why he had no idea who she was and believes they had never met before today.  What should she do she wondered?  Should she tell Kendyl what she had learned?  Oh the decisions!  Either way she needed to finish interviewing a few other family members before she could head home.

She got home late that night; wanting to make sure she got everything detail down that she could so she could write an amazing article on the wedding.  She had given it a lot of thought and she decided she needed to tell Kendyl what she had learned.  She needed to know what happened; she needed to know so she could truly close that chapter of her life.

So the next morning Kate called Kendyl up and invited her over for breakfast and a talk.  While they ate Kate told her everything that had happened and everything she had learned about what happened to Caleb.  Kendyl just listened in silence to the story as Kate told her everything.  When Kate was done and Kendyl had taken it all in she looked at Kate and asked her a question that could change everything.

“Should I tell him who he was?  Who I was?  Should I let him know about his past or should I leave him alone and let him live out his future?” As Kendyl asked the question she was quietly shaking in her chair and Kate knew it meant a lot to her.  She knew that her answer could change a lot of people’s futures and she didn’t want to give the wrong one.

After some thought on the matter she had decided that the best advice she could give was no advice.  She looked at Kendyl and told her, “I am sorry girl; I know you want me to tell you what you should do because you don’t want to make a bad decision and I know how important this decision is to you, but in my opinion the worst decision is not making it yourself.  Only you know how you feel and you are the one that has to live with the decision you make.  So give it some time and think it over and decided for yourself what you are going to do about Caleb.

“You are right Kate, as always.  This is something I have to decide for myself for now I think I am just going to go home and think about everything you have told me.  Take care and I will talk to you soon.”

Always Late Kate - Prelude

"Always Late Kate - Prelude"

Always late Kate is something, Kate Carvan, was use to hearing.  So it did not surprise her when he best friend Angel called to see if she was going to be on time for her latest interviews.  Jumping out of the bed, Kate quickly rushes to get in the shower to get cleaned up for yet another interview she was sure was going to be like all of the others she had been on recently, a complete waste of time.

As the warm water rolled down her back Kate took a few moments to think about the events that had lead up to her current situation.

Every since she could remember she has always been a bit absent-minded.  She was known for forgetting when school projects were due, where she hid her journal even when it was time to be somewhere.  It was this reason she was still alive.

You see when she was younger her parents always believed in family night.  Every Friday night they would get together and do something as a family.  As a young child she always enjoyed family night but as she started to get older it started to feel more like a chore than anything else.  By the age of 16 she started trying to find ways to get out of going, but her father would always change her mind by telling her “One day your mother and I won’t be here anymore and all you will have will be your memories, and we want them to be good ones”.

When the next Friday came Kate was so busy writing and article for her school newspaper, always loving to write she was so absorbed into her writing she lost track of time.  When she finally went to take a break and seen the clock she realize she was late for family night!

Grabbing her phone she ran out the door but, just as she was about to lock up her cell phone vibrated.  Well that explains why I didn’t hear a phone call from dad by now Kate thought to herself; taken a deep breath she was ready to hear her father’s angry voice on the other end of the phone.

But ….. It wasn’t her father on the other line.  It was a local policeman calling to let her know her parents had been in a horrible car accident.  I am sorry Miss Carvan, he said it his most sincere voice her could, they did not survive.  They seemed to be in a rush and did not see the big truck as they went to turn.  Kate dropped to her knees still holding the phone, it was all her fault – her parents were dead because of her!  She figured that when she did not show up for family night or answer her cell phone, they got worried and came to find her.  It was all her fault!

As the memory faded fresh tears fell down her cheek with the water from the shower.  How could she do this she thought, how could she apply for a writing job, she had not written anything since her parents died.  She had lost the love of writing when she lost her parents, that was three years ago today.

But, her best friend Angel was right she owed it to herself and her parents to try.  She had been through job interview after job interview; job after job but nothing seemed to fit.  It seemed like she was meant to write; so when a new job opened up that was based off a writing career her best friend Angel talked her into applying for it.

So with that last thought about her past she finished getting dressed, hoping she wore something that looked professional.  Kate grabbed her phone (which had never been on vibrate since that fateful day) and walked out the door to apply for yet another job!

About Always Late Kate

So to start out I will be writing a Sims 3 Story for Paulio2 Writing Contest. You can see the contest details here ---> http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/386377.page

Basically it is a 10 week long writing contest that has 5 chapters to.  Each person was asked to create a protagonist Sim who will be out main character in our story.  Mine is Kate, and there are four other's who will be writing with me.  Two male characters and two female characters.  Paulio asked that we try to use the other protagonist sims as our main characters.  I was so excited that I wrote a prelude for Kate called "Always Late Kate" which was not required but something I wanted to do.  I really felt the need to flesh out a background story for my protagonist which is how "Always Late Kate" came to be.

Orginally I decided to try to use the story board on the Sims 3 site, but I found it to be a pain to work with and so many others used blogs sites.  So after asking around and getting help from Whisperingtruth - I finally found my way here to blogger.com.

Here is the Sim Information I am using for the contest. As well as the Introduction storyboard link to the Sims 3 storyboard as to why Kate is always late.

However, I am reposting the information here - so that I can have the entire story all in one place.
