Always Late Kate - Prelude

"Always Late Kate - Prelude"

Always late Kate is something, Kate Carvan, was use to hearing.  So it did not surprise her when he best friend Angel called to see if she was going to be on time for her latest interviews.  Jumping out of the bed, Kate quickly rushes to get in the shower to get cleaned up for yet another interview she was sure was going to be like all of the others she had been on recently, a complete waste of time.

As the warm water rolled down her back Kate took a few moments to think about the events that had lead up to her current situation.

Every since she could remember she has always been a bit absent-minded.  She was known for forgetting when school projects were due, where she hid her journal even when it was time to be somewhere.  It was this reason she was still alive.

You see when she was younger her parents always believed in family night.  Every Friday night they would get together and do something as a family.  As a young child she always enjoyed family night but as she started to get older it started to feel more like a chore than anything else.  By the age of 16 she started trying to find ways to get out of going, but her father would always change her mind by telling her “One day your mother and I won’t be here anymore and all you will have will be your memories, and we want them to be good ones”.

When the next Friday came Kate was so busy writing and article for her school newspaper, always loving to write she was so absorbed into her writing she lost track of time.  When she finally went to take a break and seen the clock she realize she was late for family night!

Grabbing her phone she ran out the door but, just as she was about to lock up her cell phone vibrated.  Well that explains why I didn’t hear a phone call from dad by now Kate thought to herself; taken a deep breath she was ready to hear her father’s angry voice on the other end of the phone.

But ….. It wasn’t her father on the other line.  It was a local policeman calling to let her know her parents had been in a horrible car accident.  I am sorry Miss Carvan, he said it his most sincere voice her could, they did not survive.  They seemed to be in a rush and did not see the big truck as they went to turn.  Kate dropped to her knees still holding the phone, it was all her fault – her parents were dead because of her!  She figured that when she did not show up for family night or answer her cell phone, they got worried and came to find her.  It was all her fault!

As the memory faded fresh tears fell down her cheek with the water from the shower.  How could she do this she thought, how could she apply for a writing job, she had not written anything since her parents died.  She had lost the love of writing when she lost her parents, that was three years ago today.

But, her best friend Angel was right she owed it to herself and her parents to try.  She had been through job interview after job interview; job after job but nothing seemed to fit.  It seemed like she was meant to write; so when a new job opened up that was based off a writing career her best friend Angel talked her into applying for it.

So with that last thought about her past she finished getting dressed, hoping she wore something that looked professional.  Kate grabbed her phone (which had never been on vibrate since that fateful day) and walked out the door to apply for yet another job!
